Getting Started w/ Library Administration

Hello,

I am Regina Johnson (jeanie).   I am currently the librarian at the East Prairie High School.
Our library is a 7-12 library and we are a small school in Southeast Missouri.  I love being in the library !    I began my career as a FACS teacher and was doing that for 13 years.    I was ready for a change and when the job came open in East Prairie I was glad to be given the opportunity to work back in my hometown.   (I have always worked 2-6 hours away from home).    I have been given ample time to get my Library Certification and have tried to get the Certification through the Praxis.   Not a good idea.    I feel I wasted too much of my "ample" time on that very hard test.    I am now going to do the right thing and get my degree in Library Science through classes.   The library and I are the perfect match.   I love a quiet room, to see students actually study, and to be able to help with research.   I currently do not belong to any professional organizations although I do plan to join MASL before this year is out.   I don't have a favorite database, mainly because there is so much blocked in our library by our technician.   EBSCO is used in the library; but I know there is bound to be so much more that would help my kids.   Will have to work on that as I learn more from my fellow classmates and these college classes.

I am not familiar with the 2.0 world; but there again I believe that I will learn more about it as my years at college go on.

I set up my first Skype due to requirements of this class and I am glad I did.   My first grandchild just left for college and I will be able to skype with her!   I do not have a Web cam, have never twittered, and I have no idea what a screencast is.

I am familiar with the 21st Century Learner and the Common Core Standards.

I do hope that my classmates are patient with me and can help me with the new technology that we will be using in this and future classes.

I wish the best for all my classmates.     Jeanie

    1. Hello Amber!
Thanks for the encouragement!! three kids? I think I would have choked myself. I had two boys, they were and are very good, but there were times when I knew why some species eat their young. They are grown now with kids of their own and doing fine. Our first Granddaughter just left for college this last week and I sure felt my age and I do miss her already. We have 3 grandkids and two more soon. My youngest son has never married (32) but has now found a young lady who has two little girls. Andy and Rebecca will marry soon and we will then have 5 grandkids. So much fun! Bobby and I have been married 6 years. He has one child, a son, named Roby (35). I have a son named Robbie (38). It gets tricky at gatherings, but Bobby and I just laugh it off. Thanks for having faith in me! See ya! jeanie

    1. I am not a critter person, but your dogs are pretty! Looks like they do a good job of keeping you company.
I taught FACS in St. Peters for 4 years. The first year I was at Ft. Zumwalt; I traveled between North and South High. After that year I had to choose which school I was going to stay at..I chose South. I still travel back to St. Peters for appointments and all. Don't stop by the school much. Hard to visit if class is going on. I still love the city lights so very much. I currently live in Southeast Missouri.... no big cities, not many lights, not too many people. Good most of the time, but I miss that. Good luck this semester! If you ever get to travel to Washington D.C. do so.... My husband and I stayed a week and saw every building and Museum and all the city had to offer. We were there for the 4th of July Fireworks ( OMG) so beautiful! The Orchestra was to die for. Our goal is to visit several other states that put on large firework shows. This year we did not travel as Bobby ( my husband) is on Chemo and so we decided we would wait until next July and try again.
I hope you get to go to as many places as you can fit into your lifetime!

    2. Why thank you Jeanie... Me too! I'd love to spend a good amount of time in DC, that would be great! St. Peters does a good job for the most part. Nice town to live in.

  3. So glad that your blog is up and running. First of all, best wishes to you and your husband with the chemo trips. I took my best friend to chemo for several years and it was a task because it was an hour's trip each way.

We don't get many people with a FACS background. You bring a different viewpoint to your librarianship as a result. My background was German and social studies before ending up in librarianship. I loved the way I could work in history in displays and lessons.

I agree with your love of D.C. -- every time I go I am thrilled to be in the city. Every street has something wonderfully historic on it and even a visit to the museums only whets the appetite to go back. You can never have seen it all.

    1. Yes, we could spend many many days in D.C. and I don't think either of us would get enough. Today I wish I had paid more attention to the Library of Congress and less on the beauty, although there is a story with each mural and sculpture. I would just love to go there now and read.
Thanks for giving us your best wishes! He is doing pretty good right now. Side effects are just terrible.
We are just sure it will work this time!
Sometimes I miss being in the classroom- then I come to my senses and know how lucky I am to be able to take care of this library and to be away from the everyday-ness of the classroom. My library offers different challenges and quietness!!!!!! Love it.
